I am going to start training a co-worker in September, and she mentioned today that she'd like some help with her son as well (he's 10 years old about 120 pounds). Have any of you worked with kids before?
I am in middle of being certified by the International Youth Conditioning Association founded by Brian Grasso and the main thing that is emphasized is injury prevention mobility drills turned into games. I wouldn't actually go to weights until he is coordinated enough to do so without injury. j
the main priority with kids is injury prevention. Kids do not spend enough time moving around and therefore have not learned how to move. For instance how many kids do you see jumping and landing straight legged OUCH!!! so it is most important to start with the basics of human movement first.
I have a session template at home I will bring in and post for you tomorrow.

game4/agility--------------3 rounds-----------------------------5-10 min
static passive fexibility--------caoche's choice--------------------5-10 min
As you can see it is not a typical workout session for a mini adult as kids have different needs especially now days when all they do is sit indoors and freak out on video games. Movement is very high on the priority list for kids and just as important is tricking them into a workout by making it a game, that is the only way to get a kid to keep moving and coming back for more or leaving wanting to come back again. The key is to keep it fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun.
and don't call it a boot camp EVER!!!! try obstical course if you go that route
if it looks like you are going to be working with kids then I suggest you check out IYCA.com and start a cert with them. I am only on level 1 and I think there are 4 levels.

if you need me to I could scan a couple of games out of the book for you to use but it is best to find games that the boy will like to play and it is easier in a group setting so as to keep their minds off of how much work it is that they are doing. You might be surprised as to what a kid finds fun as well as having a fitness benefit...just keep it simple and fun
