Let's keep some positive thoughts directed a Scott.

Good idea for this thread Nora~  and I hope you're hangin' in there too!

Cardiosaurus- HA!  Barry, glad you're doing well- love the humor~

Scott, I think you'll feel better after the test- and you will pass.  You'll have no trouble analyzing the questions properly and remember all you need is 70%.
I'm sorry I haven't provided much detail about what's on it.  Honestly, I don't remember-  I'm not holdin' out on ya man! weirdface.gif

Thanks, all.

Cardiosaurus aren't as bad as the dermapods.  The derms don't kill you or cure you - just keep you coming back.  Surgeons, on the other hand, are the knife and fork people, which speaks for itself.

I don't know if anyone has ever aced the ACE, but Scott just might.

Hi Everyone,

Just wanted to touch base while I was thinking about it in case I'm out of touch for a while.

My surgery is next Monday August 18th, I get there 5:45 AM (which is good, it means not having to spend all day thinking about it :)). My mom is flying in Friday to help out which will make things much easier for my wife in terms of getting the kids to school and stuff so I won't have to be alone in the house in the beginning.

If you don't hear from me for a couple weeks I just wanted to let you know that I'm not ignoring anyone. I found out at my pre-op that even though this isn't the most invasive surgery, it'll still require some time on pain meds which will probably make me kind of dopey. Up til now I've been able to get by on one that isn't messing me up mentally.

I've decided to wait until I'm completely healed and healthy before I even "book" the ACE exam again, I don't want anymore surprises and Tracy at ACE has been incredibly accomodating. :)

Anyway, I wish everyone well with everything and I'll check back in as soon as I can. Hopefully it'll be a LOT sooner than later.

Take care and I'll see you soon!

Scott

Thanks Nora and Katie I greatly appreciate it!

Today was supposed to be my ACE exam and I'm so glad I didn't attempt it, there's no way I'd have made it thru 3 or 4 hours. :)

I appreciate everyone's support here, hopefully the surgery will go really smoothly and I'll be up and around quickly.

Nora, I believe in prayer also and I welcome it!

Though it's not a surgery that should be exceptionally dangerous (compared to other cervical spine procedures), I know that any surgery has it's risks.

Fortunately I'm really healthy in every other respect (I was surprised that they didn't have to take any blood at pre-op because they said I was too healthy that they weren't concerned about having to take any), and I hope that will help my recovery and reduce any risks w/ the anesthesia and stuff like that.

Best wishes to everyone!

Scott

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to let you all know that my surgery Monday was very successful. My pain level right now at the surgery site (C7, I had something called a cervical laminectomy) isn't awful, though I'm sure the meds are the reason (though they make me feel awful in other ways, in fact the meds have been the worst part of it).

Lots of tightness in my neck of course and I have a lot of physical limitations but I'm just happy that the pain I was having (from the pressure on the spinal cord) appears to be completely gone so I know it's just a matter of healing now.

I'm having a "good window" now so I figured I'd check in to let everyone know I'm okay.

Tomorrow we take the dressing off to see how it's healing and hopefully it won't be oozing or anything.

Thanks to everyone's well wishes, I'm glad to be on the other side of this surgery but will be happier when I'm totally off meds.

I'll try to check in over the next week or so but I'm spending most of my time either sleeping or trying to eat to get my strength back.

Take care,

Scott

Scott-
Good to hear from you and what a relief that the operation went well!   I'm looking up what a laminectomy is...   I have a feeling you'll heal fast and be back at it soon!
Keep us posted.  biggrin

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to touch base.

I'm doing really great, just went for a walk up and down my street (my first time since surgery) and it was so awesome to be able to feel really normal again!

It was surreal because the last time I took that walk was before surgery when I had all the fears of the (then) upcoming surgery, and then to walk it today already being past it was just incredibly uplifting!

I'm actually feeling well enough that I'm going to go to my son's high school football game tomorrow night. I have no restrictions on me (except I can't lift anything heavier than a gallon of milk), but as long as I feel strong enough I can go. I won't be driving of course :)

I had to miss his first game last week which was upsetting to me since they only play 8 games as freshman. But of course last Thursday I was still heavily medicated and pretty out of it. I've been off all meds since Monday and that has made all the difference in terms of how I'm feeling.

Another thing I'm happy about is I checked the Computer exams upcoming, and they have exams in Nashville now. They used to do them here at Comp USA but when they went out of business the only exams were in a place called Murfreesboro which is a bit of a hike for such an early morning exam. This new place (New Horizons ... it appears to be a computer learning center) is only about 22 minutes or so away from my home which will make life much easier.

So, once I see my surgeon on Sept 16th and the physical therapist (though I don't think I'll need much) and start feeling strong again I'll book the exam. I've already started studying again which feels really great. There's no tremendous rush for the exam because it'll probably take several months for me to be strong enough to train anyone anyway, but still I'll be happy to get it behind me at the earliest time that makes sense.

I know I'm babbling, but I'm just really happy to be feeling mostly back to normal!

Best wishes to everyone here and thanks again for the emotional support!

Take care,

Scott

Scott glad to read your excitement about being up and about! While you might think that you don't need much Physical Therapy you should take advantage of the opportunity to pick the mind of a professional in the field and also possibly develop a relationship with him/her for potential client referrals. This is a great opportunity for you that shouldn't be overlooked as it is a similar situation with me that allowed me to be in a position to train pro football players...my physical therapist went on to buy into our local team and I already developed a relationship with him so presto the door was built and opened for me. just food for thought

Hi Shawn,

Thanks for replying.

As always, you make some excellent points here!

I'm curious to see what they recommend for me. The place I got my surgery is a massive complex that specializes in spinal surgery (they have like 5 floors of a huge building). They actually have an outpatient hospital within it (which is where my surgery was done) and their own physical therapy dept.

While having surgery was still a miserable thing to go thru (the first five days were really awful, mostly from the meds), I am glad that they were able to do the least invasive type procedure to accomplish the results so that my recovery overall hasn't been too bad compared to what it could have been.

Anyway, I certainly won't close the door to any physical therapy that's recommended, I just think that my personal situation won't need too much. Of course I could be wrong, I may need more than I'm anticipating :)

Best,

Scott

Thanks Vonni,

It's good to be feeling whole again!

I appreciate the support and your confidence in me! I do feel pretty confident that come test time I'll do well, especially now that I won't be trying to take the test while being in pain.

A big part of my fear of the test was that I was originally going to do it under those physical circumstances and then I came to my senses biggrin.gif

I hope all is going well for you and your family!

Best,

Scott

Hi Nora,

Thanks for what you wrote! :)

I am actually going to probably wait until after my follow up visit w/ my surgeon on Sept 16th to book the test. I want to make sure I'm 100 percent better and will be comfortable sitting that long.

I'm feeling great considering the surgery was only about a week and a half ago, but I still have a certain amount of tightness/discomfort so I want that to be completely gone before I take the exam.

It'll take me a couple months at least to get my strength back fully (right now I am not even allowed to lift more than a gallon of milk :)), so I figure I may as well not rush completely into the exam since I won't be able to do anything w/ my certification for a while anyway.

I am studying again though and it's good to feel like I'm back on track again.

Oh, here's something interesting, my systolic BP at my pre op was 108 and the morning of my surgery it was like 146 (I don't remember my DBP). I guess I was more stressed out the morning of surgery than I thought (even though I thought I was relatively calm).

Thanks for everything as always and best,

Scott
