As I understand it, she was the typical ugly duckling kid, fat, w/big nose and unibrow and teased mercilessly. So she took up martial arts, scared off the bullies, fixed the other 'issues', and now she's gorgeous and tough as nails! Love her, and the Biggest Loser show is fascinating to me- although granted, far from realistic. If you search YouTube, you can see some great clips (I had trouble trying to embed it).
Our instructor (and many of the students) were really down on The Biggest Loser. I've never seen it, so I can't say. They said, however, that many of their techniques were just wrong, wrong, wrong. As I said, I can't say!

Hi Vonni,
I used to watch that show quite a bit because I enjoyed watching the training segments. I think that the trainers on that show are sincere and have a LOT of energy but are put in an awkward position because of the nature of the show. Plus the way it's edited is certainly in a way that I'm sure is geared for entertainment purposes (to maximize drama :)).
I prefer not to have to watch all the drama stuff so I did finally stop watching it, though I still enjoy the finales where you can see the "clif notes" version of the season :)
Of course the way they are doing weight loss goes against everything we're being taught as trainers (we're supposed to be focused on 1 to maybe 2 lbs of weight loss per week).
Realistically, I think that someone who is morbidly obese who stops eating the way they normally do and even just does a modest amount of exercise will lose much more than that because it takes a lot of calories to maintain obesity. I'd think they'd lose quite a bit more than 1-2 lbs a week in general if they made some reasonable changes.
One thing that is sad about the Biggest Loser though is that apparently the folks do engage in some very unhealthy things in order to do well at the weigh in. I read about folks admitting that they were basically dehydrating themselves for the weigh ins, just eating jello or some other crazy thing because after all they are trying to win a "game", w/ money involved.
I wish they had a show about people losing weight in a healthier way but I guess they wouldn't get any ratings since most folks want to see dramatic and fast weight loss, and just drama in general.
I'm sure there are folks who do get inspired and try to make positive changes based on the show, but I hope they do it in a safer manner because they most likely don't have the medical staff available that the show contestants do.
I'm sure I'm not saying anything everyone here doesn't know already, I'm just "Thinking out loud" :)
