Exercise etc question - which is right?

Here's the question:

Which new client has an increased risk (that was paraphrased)?

A. 50 year old female, BP 145/90, total cholesterol 189
B. 38 year old male, shortness of breath with mild exertion
C. 40 year old male with ankle swelling and bruising
D. 42 year old female, HDL 55, BP 135/86, smoker

I chose D - high-ish BP, low HDL, and smoker. The correct answer is B. Why??

possible heart condition...that would be my guess, once the shortness of breath occurred he would need a doctors clearance to continue.

I honestly don't think they give enough information to make the 38-year old male with shortness of breath the answer.  He could just be a desk-bound, sedentary male who is unaccustomed to exercise.  You'd really need to see his profile and background to assume he's the worst risk.  Personally, I think that was an unfair question.

I agree Tekva! That was my thought - not enough info.

Hi,

I think that B is correct because the shortness of breath happened during "mild" exertion. That would be a red flag, especially since the client is only 38 years old.

But I agree, there's plenty of others in that list that would concern me as well! :)

Best,

Scott

a 38 year old male with shortness of breath from mild exertion would need a cardiac rehabilitation program in order to even start a workout program and that is after a GXT is given to determine if the heart is capable of handling that kind of stress.

I agree with you all on not enough information for an answer but with what is given this one really stands out as a health risk. that is why all the cardio equipment at the gym has the warning labels on them for people like the hypothetical 38 year old

Hi Sean,

I agree with you completely.

I ran into that question a bunch of times on the exercise etc disc, but I can't honestly remember if I answered it correctly the first timebiggrin.gif

Perhaps the question is asked in the context that the personal trainer would be finding out that information during the initial meeting with the client when they are getting health history information. Of course the trainer would then have to send them off to their doctor.

Take care,

Scott

there isn't anyone on that list that I would work with before a doctors note.
