My name is Barry, and my wife and I live in Sarasota, FL.We are originally from Washington, DC (sorry Tekva and Susan, but Im talking about real D.C. public schools and all), and also lived in New York for 20 years. When we retired we moved to Aruba, where we lived for two years before getting bored with Paradise (read island fever: its a 75 square mile island where nothing grows and tourism as an industry dwarfs everything else).
I retired at the end of 2005, after 40 years in the wine business, mostly as an importer.I also ran a wine school in D.C. for industry professionals, and a consumer advanced wine education program as well.
Fitness has always been my main interest, after wine.I played semi-pro football in the early 60s and have been a workout enthusiast all of my adult life.Surprisingly, at least to most people I know, I am not an especially rabid sports fan. While I do enjoy watching sports, I am more interested physical skill activities that I can do myself; its not a snob thing, I just rather be doing something myself than watching other guys doing it, even if they do it better.
My personal goal with regards to an ACE certification is to come out of retirement, or partially so, and train older adults, of which there is no shortage in Florida.I live in a condo in downtown Sarasota. My building, like so many other condo buildings here, has an excellent in-house exercise room, with lots of gym-quality strength and cardio equipment. So my plan is to specialize in the downtown area, where I can pretty much walk to most condo buildings, and train clients in their own facilities. As mentioned, I only want to semi-unretire.If I can develop a business with a more or less constant income stream from three to five clients training two to three times a week I'll be happy.
I too want to thank Tekva for starting this board, and I look forward to some interesting chats.
Welcome, Barry! So glad you found your way over here! The real D.C., eh? I lived in Dupont Circle in the 60s, and recently in Adams Morgan, but my home is the lovely Eastern Shore!
I admire your goal in fitness...it is also mine. There is something wonderful and special about seeing a Senior Citizen "come back".
